Fonar the leading MRI machine manufacture in the US, commissioned Vertex to brain storm and propose few concepts for a new, open and versatile machine. Up to that point, MRI machines were typically tunnel like in design. There was a large tube in which a patient was sliding into laying on the bed. This type of scan, although not a painful one, was very traumatic to patients who suffer from Claustrophobia and from time to time had to be medicated to calm down. Fonar was exploring a new magnet configuration which will make the closed tube design a thing of the past, and asked us to make it look more user patient friendly. With this new design, a patient can be scanned while standing up, laying down, sitting or in any other position.
