We were approached by Moore Industries to help with the design of a new edition of a large grinding machine. We had to learn from older model about the weaker spots of their design, and propose a better, more cost effective way to cover the machine and provide a better user access to the working area. We came up with this design which uses two sliding doors from the corner and providing a significant improvement of access to the working bed.
In addition, we were asked to redesign an automatic tool changer mechanism which is placed in the working area but must be protected from all the cooling liquid splatter and machining debris. We designed a carousel driven by a stepper motor and covered with sheet metal covers. These covers are sliding out of the way when a tool change is called for.
